Steel Detailing

What is steel detailing?

Steel detailing is the process of producing detailed drawings and models for steel fabrication — shop drawings, connection details, anchor bolt plans, and erection diagrams that translate structural engineer designs into fabrication-ready documents. Every beam, column, connection, and embed is drawn to exact tolerances before a single piece of steel is cut.

What types of steel does Praxis detail?

We cover three disciplines: Structural Steel (full-building packages — columns, beams, braces, moment frames, base plates), Miscellaneous Steel (stairs, platforms, handrails, ladders, embeds, canopies), and BIM Coordination (IFC-based clash detection, multi-discipline model coordination).

What software do you use?

Tekla Structures is our primary detailing platform. All models are built to fabrication-ready tolerances and exported in IFC 4, DSTV/NC1, and PDF formats. For coordination we use Navisworks and BIM 360. Our WYOMAA layer runs on top of Tekla to automate QA.

WYOMAA Engine

What is the WYOMAA Intelligence Engine?

WYOMAA is Praxis's proprietary AI-assisted workflow layer built on top of Tekla Structures. It automates model checking, standardizes connection libraries, flags RFI candidates before they become problems, and generates fabrication outputs in parallel — compressing delivery schedules by 40–50% on typical projects.

How does WYOMAA reduce RFIs?

By running automated clash detection and connection verification before issuing any drawings, WYOMAA catches coordination issues before they reach the fabrication floor. At project intake it processes structural engineer drawings and surfaces missing data, ambiguous connections, and dimensional conflicts within hours — not days. Our clients average 60–70% fewer RFIs than with traditional detailers.

Is WYOMAA available as a standalone product?

No. WYOMAA is embedded in every Praxis project workflow. It is not licensed separately. When you engage Praxis, you get the full intelligence layer automatically applied to your project.

Project Process

What files do fabricators need to provide?

We typically need structural engineer drawings (PDF or DWG), anchor bolt plans, connection design criteria, and any applicable project specifications. If a prior model exists (Tekla, Revit, or SDS2), that accelerates the process significantly. We review scope and return a fixed-fee proposal within 24 hours of receiving complete documentation.

How quickly can a Tekla model be delivered?

Timelines depend on scope, but our AI-assisted workflows allow us to begin modeling within 24 hours of receiving complete documentation. Most mid-size projects see initial IFC/model delivery within 5–10 business days. We issue a fixed-fee proposal with a firm timeline at intake.

Do you coordinate with engineers and fabricators?

Yes. Praxis operates as the coordination layer between structural engineers and fabricators. We maintain an RFI hub for each project, track open items, and issue coordinated responses to keep fabrication schedules on track. Weekly status reports and milestone tracking are included on all engagements.

How does pricing work?

All projects are fixed-fee — no hourly billing surprises. We review your scope, ask clarifying questions, and issue a firm quote within 24 hours. Pricing is based on scope, steel tonnage, complexity of connections, and required deliverables. Revisions within scope are included.

Deliverables

What deliverables do you provide?

Standard deliverables include: Tekla model (IFC 4 / DSTV export), shop drawings (PDF), anchor bolt plans, erection diagrams, bill of materials (BOM), and CNC/DSTV files. Additional deliverables available on request: Revit model, structural analysis output, custom BOM formats for ERP integration.

Are your drawings stamped?

Shop drawings are issued as fabrication-ready packages. Engineer-of-record stamping for connection design is coordinated with the structural engineer of record. We can work with your EOR directly or with a designated connection design engineer.
